Description

These are two pairs of semi-detached, two-storey cottages built in the late 19th century. The cottages are constructed of cream-coloured squared and snecked sandstone rubble with stugged ashlar dressings, including ashlar mullions. Bracketed eaves, overhanging gables with plain bargeboards, and coped stacks are notable features. Cast-iron guttering and downpipes are also present.

The symmetrical front elevation features a pair of gabled bays in the centre, the one to the right being slightly broader and advanced. These bays contain tripartite windows on the ground floor and bipartite windows in the gableheads. Modern doors are present on No. 1, while No. 2 has a boarded door. Each cottage has a letterbox fanlight above a small flanking bay.

The east and west elevations are gabled, with windows to the north at ground floor level and centrally positioned at the first floor within the gableheads. Single-storey lean-to additions are recessed to the north. The north elevation features a lean-to with a window in the outer bay, a window, and a back door to the inner bay on the ground floor; a bipartite window breaking the eaves is situated on the first floor, topped with a gabled dormerhead.

Nos. 3 and 4 are similar in design, except the front gable of No. 3 is not advanced. No. 4 has a large, gabled, two-storey harled addition to the rear.

The cottages originally featured timber sash and case windows with small diamond panes in the upper lights of the advanced gables, while other windows had plate glass. Modern windows are present in the rear extension. Grey slates cover the roofs. The statutory address covers numbers 1 to 4 inclusive, Easter Ulston Cottages.
