Description
These are a pair of late 19th-century semi-detached cottages, repeated to form four cottages in total, in the village of Easter Ulston. The cottages are built of cream-coloured squared and snecked sandstone rubble with stugged ashlar dressings and ashlar mullions. The roofs are covered with grey slates, and there are coped stacks at the central point of each block, along with cast-iron guttering and downpipes.
The front elevation is symmetrical, with a pair of gabled bays centrally positioned, the right-hand gable being slightly broader and projecting forward. Each bay is punctuated with tripartite windows on the ground floor and bipartite windows in the gableheads. The doors are modern at number 1 and boarded at number 2, both with letterbox fanlights over small flanking single-storey bays. The east and west elevations are gabled, with windows to the north at ground floor level and centrally at the first floor within the gableheads. A single-storey, lean-to is recessed to the north of each pair. The north elevation features a lean-to extension with windows and a back door to the inner bay at ground floor, with a bipartite window breaking the eaves and set within a gabled dormerhead at first floor.
Cottages 3 and 4 largely mirror the design of the first pair, with the exception of number 3's front gable which does not project. Number 4 has a large, gabled, two-storey harled addition to the rear. The windows are timber sash and case, with diamond panes in the advanced gables and plate glass in the extension. The statutory address for all four cottages is 1-4 Easter Ulston Cottages.
