Description

6 Mill Wynd in Lauder is an early to earlier 19th century villa with a slightly later addition. This two-storey, three-bay rectangular plan building features a later two-storey rear or west wing. The design is classical, highlighted by a pedimented entrance bay on the principal or east elevation. The principal and south elevations are constructed with coursed cherry caulking whinstone, while the rest of the building and the rear wing are made of coursed whinstone rubble. The main block is adorned with droved sandstone ashlar dressings, a base course, and an eaves course. The vertical margins are accentuated with flanking quoins at the corners, and the windows are architraved with flanking alternate blocks and slightly projecting cills.

On the east elevation, the arrangement is symmetrical. The central entrance features a later 19th century glazed timber porch with pilastered arrises. The entrance includes a four-panel timber door with a rectangular fanlight to the right return. A tripartite window with narrow flanking lights is located at the front, along with a window to the left return. Above, a wide window is positioned beneath the base of the pediment, which is supported by flanking brackets, and a blind lunette is aligned above this window. There are single windows on both the ground and first floors of the flanking bays.

The west elevation has a slightly lower wing that connects to the center of the main block, which features a gabled dormer above. There is also a later polygonal dormer to the left, while the remaining fenestration is not visible. The south elevation has flanking windows on each storey, and the north elevation is blank.

The villa mainly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with grey slate roofs that are piended on the main block and partially piended on the rear wing. Shouldered sandstone ashlar wallhead stacks with moulded cornices are located on either side of the main block.

The interior has not been inspected since 1998. Surrounding the terrace to the east of the house is a low whinstone rubble wall topped with rounded sandstone coping and cast iron railings featuring stylised finials. The wall is segmentally recessed in plan to the west at the center and includes a cast iron gate at the north end.
