Description
Springwells Old Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the later 18th century, with some later additions and alterations. It is a two-storey, three-bay building in a plain classical style, featuring a two-storey wing at the rear that creates a near L-plan. The front and southwest sides are constructed of heavily-pointed sandstone rubble, with droved rubble dressings, while the northeast side has a harled elevation. The front openings are framed with long and short droved rubble surrounds, with stone margins on the southwest and rendered margins on the northeast, and projecting cills throughout. At the rear, there is a single-storey, flat-roofed garage addition.
On the southeast (entrance) elevation, there is a step leading up to a timber panelled door that is centered at the ground level, topped with a plate glass fanlight and a bracketed cornice. Above this door, there is a single window aligned directly above. Each of the flanking bays also features a single window on both floors.
The northeast (side) elevation of the main house has a single window at ground level to the left and another single window at the first floor, offset to the right of center. The two-bay wing, which is recessed to the right, has a modern timber panelled door at ground level to the left, a single window at the first floor, a modern window at ground level to the right, and another single window at the first floor.
On the southwest (side) elevation, the main house has a single window at ground level to the right. The two-storey wing is recessed to the left and features a single-storey projection in the re-entrant angle.
The windows throughout predominantly have four-pane glazing in timber sash and case style. The roof is covered with purple-grey slate and features stone coped skews, along with replacement rainwater goods. The apex stacks are made of brick and have cornices with circular cans.
The interior was not seen in 1998. There is also a heavily-pointed low rubble wall to the side of the front garden, with a modern wall at the front.
