Description
Canongate Bridge in Jedburgh is a 16th-century bridge made of coursed cream sandstone. It features a mix of masonry finishes due to later repairs, primarily droved and ashlar, with some pink sandstone patching. The bridge has three segmental arches, one of which serves as an overflow arch. Each arch has four chamfered ribs on the underside, although the east arch now only has two. The piers include cutwaters that support canted refuges at road level. The parapet wall has quadrants and steps at both ends, topped with saddleback ashlar coping. The roadway is hump-backed and varies in width from 9 feet 6 inches to 9 feet 10 inches.
