Description
The Monument to Antoine De La Bastie is a 19th-century structure that was re-erected in 1975. It features a square-plan, slightly-tapering column made of ashlar stone, with a base course and swept coping that has a narrow frieze with studs. Above this is a tall pedestal, which has an embossed cross on each of its four faces. The monument is topped with a cornice and a drum that has a carved cap.
On the southeast face, there is an inscription that reads: "In Memory of Antoine de la Bastie, a French knight who had been appointed ward of the Marches instead of Lord Home treacherously beheaded in Edinburgh. De la Bastie and his troops met Home of Wedderburn and his clan near Langton and Home accused him of being accessary to the slaughter of his chief. A fight ensued; the French were defeated and de la Bastie slain and buried at this spot and a cairn raised over the grave by order of Patrick Home of Broomhouse ad 1517 RIP."
Additionally, there is a bronze plaque below the inscription that states: "Re-erected 1975 by Berwickshire Civic Society."
