Description
The former William Beck's Stocking Shop, located at the rear of 21 High Street, dates from around 1800. This two-storey, L-plan building features a gabled design and was originally used for stocking manufacturing, but has since been converted into housing. It is situated along a cobbled courtyard and has small, square windows on the first floor that were once used for the workshops. The structure is built from random whinstone rubble, with mostly replacement red and yellow sandstone ashlar dressings.
The east elevation facing the courtyard has an L-plan forestair at the re-entrant angle, irregular window placement on the ground floor, workshop windows on the first floor, and a remnant of the chimney base at the apex of the left gable. The west elevation at the rear includes a timber-boarded door to the pend on the left side of the ground floor, two windows to the right, and six workshop windows on the first floor. The south elevation has one window on each floor and a blank gable end on the left.
The building features replacement multi-pane timber windows, with sash and case windows in the offices and casement windows in the former workshops. It has a grey slate roof with metal ridges.
