Description

19 and 21 High Street in Hawick is a tenement building dating from the earlier to mid-19th century. It stands three stories tall with an attic and features four bays, forming part of a terrace that includes three shops and a pend at the ground level. The building has three dormers on the ridge roof. The shopfronts are smooth-rendered, with painted tooled ashlar and painted polished ashlar margins, as well as raised cills above. The rear is constructed of rubble with red sandstone ashlar dressings.

The fenestration is regular, with panelled stallrisers beneath the shopfronts and an eaves course. The shopfronts have timber-panelled, three-quarter-glazed doors with rectangular fanlights. Notably, there is a good example of a curved 'island' window on the right shop, featuring basket-arched window surrounds and foliate capitals on the glazing bars. The central canted dormer is flanked by gabled dormers.

The shop windows are fitted with fixed plate glass, some of which are curved, while the other windows in the building are timber sash-and-case. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there is a rendered, ashlar-coped ridge stack with circular buff clay cans on the south side.
