Description

The Borders Club, located at 9 High Street in Hawick, is a former clubhouse and tenement built in 1900 by James Pearson Alison, incorporating earlier elements. This single-bay, three-storey building with an attic is part of a terrace and features a late-20th-century shopfront on the ground floor. The upper storeys are slightly recessed and include a two-storey canted window on both the first and second floors, with an attic gable that has a plinth supporting an open pediment.

The shopfront is smooth-rendered, while the upper sections are constructed from red sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, with some brick and random rubble present at the rear. The shopfront has a consoled fascia and cornice, and there are cornices above the canted windows. The parapet displays incised detailing. The windows are tripartite stone-mullioned with chamfered surrounds, and all windows feature chamfered stone mullions.

The shopfront is fitted with fixed plate glass, and the upper floors have plate glass in timber sash-and-case windows. There is also a stained-glass stair window overlooking the pend to the northeast at the rear. The roof is covered with grey slate and has moulded ashlar skews, along with a corniced ashlar gablehead stack.

Inside, a timber stair with a timber balustrade is accessed through a door in the pend to the right.
