Description

This is an early 19th century farmhouse, with additions and alterations made in the later 19th century. It has a 2-storey, 5-bay gabled L-plan, built on a slope with a small courtyard to the rear, and a single-storey range of outbuildings. The exterior is harled and painted white, with smooth ashlar margins and long and short droved quoins at the entrance and on the north gable.

The east elevation has a symmetrical 5-bay design. A deep-set door with a rectangular fanlight is within an advanced gabled central bay, featuring a cornice above the door and an arrowslit in the gable. Return walls have narrow windows illuminating the hall at ground level. Each pair of flanking bays contain a single bipartite window at ground level, and two single windows on the first floor.

The south elevation is a 2-storey, 4-bay side elevation with a gable over the bays to the right and part of the bay to the left of the centre. The outer right bay is blank with a gablehead stack to the left, while the inner right bay has a window at ground level. The two left bays have windows on both floors and a door to the left. A simple lean-to conservatory is situated at ground level.

The north elevation is a blank end gable with a ground floor window to the left. Two bays are set back to the right, forming a 2-storey addition with a piend roof and a large kitchen window at ground level, and a pair of windows above. Single-storey outbuildings and a back door adjoin to the far right, creating the courtyard.

The west elevation facing Sharplaw Road shows that the upper floor wall of the rear wing of the house abuts the higher pavement and joins a rubble boundary wall with ashlar coping to the south. A pair of gablehead stacks flank the central window. Lower rear walls of the outbuildings are to the north, with a piended dormer providing access to the hayloft. The boundary wall continues to the north with rubble and semi-circular coping. To the west, a single-storey, piend-roofed former coach house and stable has its south wall forming the side of the courtyard. The left side of the west elevation comprises a 4-bay former coach house with three windows and a door, while a garage was added later with a separate door.

The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case, with plate glass on the lower panes at ground level (bipartite windows are later 19th century). The roof is covered in grey slates. The stacks are plain with octagonal cans, and there are ashlar skews.

Inside, the dining room on the right of the hall has 19th century Renaissance panelling brought from Wemyss Hall, near Hawick, at the beginning of the 20th century. Otherwise, the interior is relatively plain. An old well is located under the kitchen.
