Description
The Deer Larder at The Haining was built around 1830, possibly by John Smith, and was restored in 1994. It is a small polygonal structure with a raised basement, situated on ground that slopes sharply to the north. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked whinstone rubble, accented with contrasting red sandstone ashlar dressings. There is a gabled doorway on the east side, with a small plaque above it stating 'RESTORED BY ANDREW NIMMO-SMITH IN 1994', and a truncated stack at the gablehead. Inside, a short passageway leads to the polygonal chamber, which features broad openings (formerly bipartite) on each face. The roof is covered with graded grey slates.
Beneath the deer larder is a large underground egg-shaped ice house measuring 6 meters by 12 meters, connected by a 5-meter long tunnel. The ice house is constructed with tooled red sandstone on the lower half, and small sandstone blocks or bricks extend into a corbelled vault. There are red sandstone entrance steps and a small walkway nearby.
