Description
West Lodge at Spottiswoode is a single-storey lodge from the later 19th century, featuring a part-attic. The building is harled with sandstone dressings and has decorative barge boards, along with later additions and alterations. A moulded string course runs over the windows at ground level.
On the south elevation, the lodge has three bays. The central bay and the bay to the left have mullioned windows. To the right, there is a slightly advanced gabled bay with a canted window at ground level that has a cornice, and a window in the gable head at the first floor, which features a dated and inscribed pedimented surround reading: "Mihi vivere Christus et mori lucrum 1596." There is also a later door with a canopy located to the outer right.
The north (rear) elevation includes a later single-storey addition to the outer right. It shows a variety of windows, with mullioned timber casement windows on the south elevation, except for a 12-pane timber sash and case window at the first floor. The roof is covered with terracotta tiles and has plain ridge tiles, extending to the ground floor on the east side. There is a dormer window on the east with a segmental-arched multi-paned window. The north side of the east gable features harled paired stacks, while a later red brick stack is located between the bays to the left on the south side. The gable in the bay to the right has timber ornamental barge boarding with a kingpost and finial at the apex, and there is also a timber barge board on the gable of the west elevation.
The interior was not seen in 1995. The boundary walls are constructed of rubble with ashlar coping and feature timber railings.
