Description
The Horse Mill at Clarabad is likely from the early 19th century, with some later additions and alterations. It is a single-storey, octagonal-plan former horse mill that is attached to a two-storey, rectangular-plan barn to the east. The building is mainly constructed from tooled cream sandstone rubble, featuring tooled dressings.
The horse mill has a large, square-headed opening on the south side, while the barn is located to the east. The roof is covered with grey slate. Inside, the walls are made of rubble, and there is a boarded timber partition to the east that encloses a later engine room, which contains a fixed engine, a workbench, and tools that remain in place. The roof structure is open timber, and the slates are overlapping grey.
On the west elevation of the barn, there is a two-leaf boarded loft door that breaks the eaves at the center, along with an arched projection at the ground level. The horse mill is located to the outer left. The south elevation features a gable end with a single window centered at the first floor. The east elevation has a boarded timber door centered at the ground level, with a boarded opening above it and single windows flanking at ground level. There is a later addition that projects to the outer right, and part-ventilated windows are present on the east side. The roof remains grey slate with stone-coped skews. The interior was not seen in 1999.
