Description

Horseupcleugh

Early 19th century steading with later additions and alterations, set into a hillside. The complex comprises a single-storey near U-plan steading with a 2-storey former millhouse to the north-east; a later covered cattle court projects from the centre, creating an E-plan arrangement. Enclosing the courtyard is a rectangular-plan single-storey building with attic space and four bays, a former farmhouse to the south, adjoined by a lower single-storey, 3-bay wing (possibly a shepherd's cottage).

Throughout the complex, the buildings are constructed of harl-pointed sandstone and whinstone rubble with rubble dressings (some droved in part); some timber lintels remain, with various brick repairs evident. Original cast-iron rooflights are present. Roofs are predominantly grey slate piended, with corrugated iron covering the cattle court; most ridging is sandstone. Some cast-iron rainwater goods survive.

The former millhouse to the north-east presents four bays on its courtyard elevation, with boarded timber stable doors offset to the left of centre and at the outer left. Single and boarded openings appear at first floor level. A boarded timber stable door features in the adjoined single-storey wing to the outer right.

The north range contains a gabled cattle court advanced at the centre. The original range recesses to the right with a 2-leaf boarded timber door and glazed, vented opening, and to the left with a single doorway at the outer left.

The west range, three bays on the courtyard elevation, displays a bipartite doorway at the outer right and boarded timber doors at centre and outer left. The side elevation shows a 2-leaf boarded timber garage door offset to the left of centre. The rear elevation tapers toward the left (set into the hillside) with a boarded timber opening at centre, a small window at the outer right, and bricked-up openings to the left.

The former farmhouse, four bays, has a boarded timber door offset to the left of centre on its entrance elevation, flanked by single windows, with a 2-leaf boarded timber sliding door at the outer right. The west side elevation formerly had a forestair (now missing), with a boarded timber attic door offset to the left of centre and a single window to the right. A lean-to addition recesses to the left; a projecting gabled wing recesses to the outer left. The north (courtyard) elevation shows a lean-to with a large opening and a gabled wing with a boarded timber sliding door in its return. Timber sash and case windows with 12-pane glazing appear throughout, along with cast-iron rooflights. The grey slate roof has raised stone skews and rolled skewputts; some cast-iron rainwater goods remain. A corniced apex stack stands to the east (can missing).

The interior upper floor served as a granary, with boarded timber flooring and open timber roof; parts of the rubble walls remain whitewashed.

The shepherd's cottage, a 3-bay wing adjoining the former farmhouse, has a boarded timber door at the left bay on its entrance elevation and single windows in the remaining bays to the right. Windows comprise 12-pane timber casements and timber sash and case windows with small rooflights. The grey slate piended roof carries brick-built ridge stacks and a circular can, with cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior remains in residential use.
