Description
The bridge on East Drive at Traquair House was built in 1880 for the Hon. Henry Constable Maxwell Stuart, the 16th Laird. It features a two-span segmental-arched design that combines vernacular, classical, and castellated styles, ending in large cylindrical piers. The structure is made of coursed whinstone with red sandstone dressings, which include courses, copes, corbelled battlements, date stones, and ball finials.
On the north and south elevations, rusticated red sandstone abutments support a pair of segmental arches with rusticated red sandstone voussoirs. A central pier, made of similar material, has a diamond cutwater and a moulded date stone plaque from 1880 inset into the centre of the whinstone spandrels. The plain whinstone elevation features a projecting red sandstone band course, with drainage pipes regularly placed above it, and a matching plain coping that surmounts the bridge's parapet.
To the west, the bridge terminates in a pair of cylindrical coursed whinstone piers with semi-circular caps that support large ashlar ball finials. To the east, it ends in another pair of cylindrical coursed whinstone piers with a corbel course that supports a battlemented parapet, with the band course and parapet coping continuing around the inner arches of the terminating piers. The bridge has a tarmac road surface with side gutters that lead to drainage pipes.
