Description
The bridge at Cranstoun Dean, designed by Charles Abercromby in 1805, features a high single-span structure. It is flanked by classical pilasters and has a parapet with curved wing walls. The bridge is constructed from dressed and droved yellow sandstone ashlar, with some red sandstone incorporated.
On the south and north principal elevations, the bridge showcases a single semi-circular span, with ashlar voussoirs and a moulded impost course. Above this, there is a moulded dentil course followed by a parapet, with slab coping on all sides. The flanks of the span are supported by pilasters and slightly projecting support walls, which have square details in their courses, while curved wing walls extend to each side. On the south side, there are carved stones in the right pilaster inscribed with "JAMES CLERK of chesterhall Convenor, Cha Abercromby Edin arch, 1805." The left wing wall on the north side is terminated by a buttress that supports a high adjoining bank.
