Description

Turnbull And Scott (Engineers) Ltd, located at 16-20 Commercial Road, is an early 20th-century, two-storey, three-bay Tudor-style administration block designed in a roughly T-plan. The building features shouldered gables, a corniced parapet, and mullioned windows. It is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings, and includes a moulded eaves course, hoodmoulds over the ground floor windows, and pronounced masonry cills. The gableheads are adorned with blind arrow slits. At the rear, there are two large sheds that are illuminated by pairs of large keystoned segmental-headed windows.

The principal (eastern) elevation has a timber panelled door with a plain fanlight and a gablet pediment above it, located in the central bay. To the left is a horizontal tripartite window. The wings on either side are roughly symmetrical and recessed, each featuring tripartite windows at the centre and shouldered wall-head gables. The left bay of the right wing has a later large tripartite window. The windows are fitted with small-pane glazing in metal-framed casement and fixed-light styles. The roof is covered with grey slate and red ridge tiles, and there are coped ridge stacks.

The rear (western) side has a pair of linked sheds with shouldered gable ends. A large sliding corrugated iron door is located on the left side of the northern elevation, and there is a small single-storey addition to the east with a corrugated iron roof. The western elevations are clad in asbestos and corrugated iron, with continuous ridge glazing. There are non-traditional additions on the southern side.

Inside the administration block, repairs were made following a flood in 2005, but it still retains its original stair and tiled floor in the vestibule. The sheds feature a cast-iron roof structure, with the eastern shed retaining an original manually operated hoist set into the side walls.
