Description
3-5 Castlegate in Jedburgh is a late 17th century tenement that has undergone later alterations. It is a three-storey building with an attic and features three bays, including a shop and a pedestrian pend at the ground level. The building has rectangular windows in all bays and a modern stair tower at the rear. The exterior is harled with painted ashlar margins and cills.
The two left bays are slightly advanced and have a crowstepped gable topped with a ball finial and an attic window. To the right, there is a return with a glazed door and a letterbox fanlight leading into the shop. The right bay includes a pend to the right, with rubble margins featuring chamfered arrises, leading to Under Nags Head Close, and a square window to the left at ground level, with single windows on the upper floor.
The rear facade is irregularly harled with concrete cills. At the center, there is a projecting semi-circular stair tower, built around 1978, which has a door at the ground level and a conical roof. There are single bays on either side of the stair tower, with a bipartite window in the upper right. The building also features a pair of small piend-roofed dormers.
The windows include 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a 9-pane vertical pivot attic window, and 4-pane casements in the dormers and stair tower. The ground level has a plate glass window, and the roof is covered with grey slates.
