Prince Charlie's House, 7 Castlegate, Jedburgh

Prince Charlie's House, located at 9 Castlegate in Jedburgh, is a late 17th century building that has undergone later rebuilding. It is a three-storey and attic tenement with an irregular six-bay layout, arranged in groups of 2-1-3. The ground floor features shops and a pend leading to Blackhills Close, while the rear has two-storey and attic ranges. The building is constructed of harled rubble with painted ashlar margins and cills, and it has crow-stepped gables with windows in all bays.

On the southeast elevation facing Castlegate, there is a broad pend at the center topped with a heavy cornice, with windows positioned above it. To the right at the first floor, an ashlar plaque reads "PRINCE CHARLIE'S HOUSE." The three bays to the right are grouped together, featuring plate glass windows at ground level that extend down to the pavement. The entrance to a barber shop is accessed from the pend, marked by a barber's pole trade sign above. To the left of the center bay on the second floor, there is a large and elaborate sundial with tabular and bowl-shaped dials, which is now mostly decayed, although the crest of the Blackhills family was once visible. The two bays to the left include a three-bay painted ashlar corniced shop front at ground level, with a central door flanked by vertically divided plate glass display windows. There is a blank return to the north gable adjoining No 5.

The rear elevation features a pend with a shallow pink sandstone arch and a window above on each floor, along with a box dormer. To the north, there is a rebuilt two-storey and attic three-bay wing, which has tile-hung box dormers breaking the eaves on both elevations. The right bay contains a sadly decayed roll-moulded, lugged, and ogee-headed Renaissance doorcase with a frieze and panel above, leading to a modern door. This wing continues as Under Nags Head Close. To the south, there is a rebuilt irregular seven-bay range with a conical-roofed stair tower in the re-entrant angle. This section includes an ancient chamfered ashlar doorcase with a modern door leading to the stair, and two three-storey bays to the right. Beyond this is a two-storey four-bay range with a large single tile-hung dormer. Both ranges are terminated by long and short quoins and feature 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with dormers having 12-pane casements. The roof is covered with grey slate and has rendered stacks.

The interior was not seen in 1992, but it originally featured 18th century panelling and bolection moulded fireplaces, which have apparently been removed during restoration.
