Description
Law House is an asymmetrical, two-storey house with an attic, dating from the earlier to mid-19th century. It has undergone later additions and alterations. Originally built in an L-shape with three bays, it features a gabled porch projecting centrally, a two-storey, flat-roofed addition in the re-entrant angle to the rear, and a single-storey garage block recessed to one side.
The front of the building is constructed of coursed and tooled cream sandstone with sandstone ashlar dressings, while the sides are rendered and the rear is rubble. A stepped band course runs along the base, and there is a partial eaves course. Stugged quoins mark the corners, and the openings have shouldered and tabbed surrounds with chamfered cills. Sandstone mullions divide the windows, and there are hoodmoulds over the principal openings, with floral stops.
The south-west (entrance) elevation features a stone staircase leading to the gabled porch, which has a round-arched, timber-panelled door and a round-arched hoodmould with floral stops. The gablehead is finished with a ball finial, and there is a bipartite window on the first floor. A tripartite window is located on the ground floor to the right, with a stepped hoodmould above it. A bipartite window aligns above. A gabled bay projects to the outer left, with a tripartite window centred on the ground floor (stepped hoodmould) and a bipartite window above (stepped hoodmould); a small attic light sits above this. The recessed garage block on the outer right has a modern garage door and a small attic light.
The north-west (side) elevation is symmetrical with three bays, featuring bipartite windows at both ground and first floor levels in each bay, and a single-storey, lean-to addition to the outer left. The north-east (rear) elevation includes a gabled projection to the outer right, a single-storey, lean-to addition at ground level, an irregularly fenestrated two-storey, flat-roofed addition slightly recessed to the left, and an off-set box dormer. The garage block is adjoined to the outer left, with a lower piended projection to the ground.
The south-east (side) elevation displays a gable end with bipartite windows centred on both the ground and first floors, an attic light above, and a projecting single-storey garage block.
The windows are predominantly timber sash and case with five panes horizontally to each light on the front elevation. Some modern windows are present at the rear. The roof is covered in grey slate, with gablet-coped skews and scroll-bracketed skewputts. Sandstone apex stacks with linked, square-plan flues are present, along with various cans. The interior was not inspected in 1999.
