Description
The Manse at Coldingham Church dates from 1801, with repairs and enlargement in 1828, and further additions and alterations in subsequent years. It is a two-storey, four-bay, near-rectangular building with a single-storey, flat-roofed porch to the front, a single-storey piended porch recessed to the southwest side, and a full-height projection to the rear. A single-storey, near-rectangular ancillary structure is located to the southwest.
The building is predominantly harled, with a lightly coursed render to the rear projection; sandstone ashlar dressings are used throughout. Narrow quoin strips and flush margins are present, along with projecting cills. The southeast (entrance) elevation features a window in the projecting porch, offset to the right of centre, a panelled timber door with a plate glass fanlight to the left return, and a window to the right return. Single windows are recessed in the remaining ground-floor bays, and single windows are present in all bays at the first floor. A piended porch is recessed to the outer left.
The northeast (side) elevation is two bays and regularly fenestrated. The northwest (rear) elevation has a regularly fenestrated two-bay block to the right, followed by a bay to the left with single windows at both floors, and then a full-height projection to the outer left, also with single windows at both floors. A piended porch is recessed to the outer right. The southwest (side) elevation displays a window in the piended porch, offset to the left of centre, a boarded timber door with a two-pane fanlight to the right return, and a single window centred at the first floor.
Predominantly 12-pane glazing is used in timber sash and case windows. The roof is grey slate and piended, with corniced ashlar ridge and wallhead stacks; a harled ridge stack is located on the northeast side, and various circular cans are visible. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present.
The interior includes a vestibule door with a decorative etched glass panel and fanlight. A basket-arched vestibule opening, dating from circa 1900, features engaged square-plan columns, decorative carving, and a dentilled cornice. Timber dado rails are present in part, along with plaster cornices, and timber panelled doors. The staircase consists of timber treads, plain uprights, a timber handrail. Various chimneypieces are also present.
The ancillary structure is constructed of harl-pointed sandstone rubble with rubble dressings. Its southeast (entrance) elevation features a modern garage door off-set to the right of centre. The northeast (side) elevation is three bays, with a bipartite window at centre, boarded timber doors in flanking bays, and a timber door in a single-storey addition recessed to the outer right. It has a grey slate piended roof. Its interior was not inspected in 1999.
Coped rubble sandstone garden walls enclose the site, with square-plan, coursed cream ashlar gatepiers flanking the entrance, pyramidal caps, and a two-leaf timber gate.
