Description
The Haughhead Railway Viaduct in Walkerburn was opened in 1864 and is a five-span, iron plate-girder bridge that crosses the River Tweed. It features riveted construction with brick in-fill beneath the spans and has coursed rusticated sandstone ashlar cutwater piers.
On the north and south elevations, there are five segmental-headed iron spans, with girders supporting beneath. The overhanging edge copes are riveted and rest on tall rectangular cutwater piers, four in total. The bridge is supported on the riverbank by altered ashlar supports, each accompanied by a later path and embankment. The original track and ballast have been removed, and a modern footpath has been laid. There is also evidence of service pipes being carried across the river to the south.
