Description
Woodend is a late 18th century house, significantly reworked in the mid 19th century and subsequently altered with later additions. It is a two-storey house with an attic, originally a four-bay design, with a steading located to the southwest. The house is harled with ashlar dressings, while the steading is constructed of harl-pointed rubble with droved ashlar dressings. An eaves course runs along the house.
The east elevation of the house features a modern glazed door with a three-pane rectangular fanlight above, positioned in the bay to the inner right. To the outer right is a ground floor window and two first-floor windows. A canted window, complete with a base course, cornice, and parapet, is situated at ground floor level in the inner left bay, with a bipartite window above. An advanced tripartite ashlar window, also with a base course, cornice, and parapet, is located at ground floor level in the outer left bay, accompanied by a bipartite window above. A window sits between the inner and outer left bays.
The northwest elevation reveals a two-storey wing projecting to the outer left, featuring a boarded door and a window above. A gabled porch is centrally positioned on the remaining three-bay section, with a door on the southwest return elevation and a window above. A stair window is found in the bay left of centre on the three-bay group.
The windows throughout are timber sash and case, incorporating 12-pane, 4-pane, and plate glass. A slate roof is topped with coped skews, particularly visible to the outer and southeast (just left of the bay to the inner right), each adorned with scroll skewputts. Piended canted dormers are present in the inner and outer left bays. Tall ashlar stacks, with wallhead and ridge placements, are a prominent feature.
The interior of the house was not inspected in 1995, but shutters remain in place and are functional.
The steading, situated southwest of the house, is of quadrangular plan with a central court. Alterations have been made, including the addition of modern sheds, which screen the steading to the northwest, northeast, and partially to the southeast. The northeast range is built on falling ground and comprises a single-storey, seven-bay structure, grouped as 1-1-3-1-1. Blinded window openings are present in the three-bay group. The bay to the left of the three-bay group has lowered eaves; it is otherwise blank except for a split boarded door to the outer right and a blinded opening at eaves level. A rubble wall incorporates a modern brick and corrugated iron barn above. A four-centred arch with a boarded door is located in the penultimate gabled bay to the right, with a blinded arrow opening in the gablehead. A window is in the outer right bay. The northeast range’s southwest elevation has two blinded four-centred arched openings on the outer right. The northwest range has a 13-bay facade, with a raised central bay featuring a four-centred arch with boarded double sliding doors, a gabled window to the attic with a roundel in the gablehead, and a ball finial. Boarded doors are present in each of the flanking four bays, and a window is located on the inner side of the penultimate bay to each side. Sliding boarded double doors are situated in the third and fifth bays to the right. Bipartite windows are in the penultimate outer bays. Gabled outer bays feature a window and a blinded arrow opening to the gablehead. The northeast elevation of the northwest range is immediately adjacent to a modern shed. It includes 12-pane timber sash and case windows, along with a nine-pane hopper timber window, and has a slate roof.
