Allanbank

Allanbank Cottage is a Classical villa built around 1825, with late 19th century additions. It is a two-storey, three-bay, symmetrical T-plan structure featuring an advanced central pedimented bay, an entrance porch, and recessed single-storey and basement piended-roof pavilions on either side. There is also a late 19th century two-storey gabled wing at the rear. The front elevation is constructed of sandstone ashlar, while the sides and rear are made of finely laid whinstone rubble with ashlar dressings. The ground floor has rusticated ashlar, a band course, a moulded eaves course, and rusticated quoins. The principal elevations have regular window patterns, while the rear displays an irregular arrangement.

The porch, designed in the Tuscan Order, features a two-leaf timber panelled front door with a border-glazed rectangular fanlight above, all set within a deep pilastered architrave. The attic includes a tripartite window and a flat-roofed dormer, while the side elevations have blind windows on the first floor. To the northeast of the rear section, there is a two-storey canted bay with steps leading up to it. An outbuilding, now used as a garage, has a piended roof and is linked to the northeast.

The earlier section of the cottage predominantly features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, while the rear has 4-pane glazing. The roof is covered with small grey slates, and there are stone skews and beaked skew putts, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, the cottage boasts a good early 19th century decorative scheme with classical detailing. The entrance lobby has a saucer dome with a ribbed plaster cornice and a floral ceiling rose. There is a glazed inner screen with a decorative fanlight, and the principal rooms feature decorative plasterwork and contemporary fireplaces. The main staircase is complemented by a timber balustrade.

To the west of the house is a walled garden, enclosed by a rubble wall with round copes that is raised to the north elevation, and it has timber boarded doors.

Ancillary buildings are located to the northwest of the walled garden, including a compact single-storey, two-bay L-plan cottage and a four-bay long L-plan stable to the southeast. Both structures are built of whinstone rubble with sandstone ashlar margins, featuring an eaves course, coped skews with beaked skew putts, and pitched grey slate roofs. The cottage has end stacks, while the stable includes cast-iron and timber boarded stall dividers.
