Description
Harcarse is a house dating from the mid to later 18th century, with later additions and alterations. It is a two-storey, four-bay rectangular-plan building featuring two-storey additions at the rear and a single-storey wing attached to the outer right. The exterior is constructed of heavily pointed rubble with sandstone dressings and some rendering. It has a polished eaves course beneath corniced eaves, tooled sandstone quoins, sandstone margins, and flush cills, along with relieving arches.
The south elevation, which is the entrance side, has four bays. There is a step leading to a part-glazed modern timber door located in the bay to the right of centre, which has an opaque glazed fanlight and a moulded surround. A single window is aligned above it at the first floor. The remaining bays to the right and left each have single windows on both floors. The single-storey wing, which is recessed to the outer right, features a square-headed door in the bay to the left and a small single window in the bay to the right.
On the west side elevation, the original house is to the right, with single windows on both floors in the outer right bay. A two-storey addition is recessed to the left and has a small single window at the first floor.
The north rear elevation is irregularly fenestrated, with a two-storey projection at the centre. There are single windows on both floors in a full-height bay to the left, which has a castellated parapet. The single-storey wing to the outer left has single openings, while a small single window is located at ground level in a bay recessed to the right of centre. There are also single windows on both floors in the outer right bay.
The east side elevation features the original house to the left, with single windows on both floors in the outer left bay, and a projecting single-storey wing attached to the outer right.
The windows predominantly have four-pane glazing in timber sash and case style. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring raised skews and moulded skewputts. There is a corniced red brick wallhead stack offset to the right of centre on the south side, along with corniced red brick apex stacks on the east and west sides, and various circular cans.
The interior was not seen in 1998. The property is enclosed by plain iron railings, which include iron gatepiers and a vehicular gate.
