Description

This is a complex of buildings, including a house, chapel, and dormitory block, located in Lochwinnoch. The main house, originally dating to 1796 and designed by David King, was altered and extended between 1820 and 1830. A chapel, built in 1943 by Thomas Cordiner, and a dormitory block added in 1936, are linked to the house.

The house is an irregular-plan, Tudor-style mansion with seven bays and two stories, incorporating a three-story, seven-bay dormitory block to the right and a single-story chapel to the left. The main facade features an advanced gabled entrance bay with a stone cross finial and a prominent pitched, arcaded timber and glazed porch. A wide, five-light canted window with a castellated parapet is situated to the right of the entrance, with a further advanced gabled bay beyond. Pedimented breaking eaves dormers, adorned with fleur-de-lys finials and scroll decoration, are incorporated into the roofline. Tall, Tudor diamond-shafted chimneystacks are a prominent feature. The side and rear elevations also exhibit advanced and recessed gables, along with blind windows, pedimented and box dormers. The exterior is constructed from stugged, squared, and snecked yellow sandstone rubble, with raised ashlar margins and dressings, a base course, and a banded eaves course. Coped sandstone skews are topped with moulded skewputts. Most windows are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows, although some incorporate plate glass. The roof is slate-covered with lead flashings and ridge mouldings. Irregular ridge and gable end chimneystacks are present, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior of the house features fine plasterwork cornices and ceiling roses on the main ground floor. A dog-leg staircase is present, with cast iron ornamental balusters and a mahogany handrail.

The chapel, built on an east-west axis, is a single-story, six-bay structure of buff brick, accessed via a three-bay, two-story brick wing linked to the main house. A central circular apse with a conical roof faces east and includes a relief sculpture of Saint Joseph by John Mortimer, flanking stained glass windows. A door is located at the east end of the south wall. The chapel features metal casement windows with glazing bars and hoppers, and a four-spoked, circular wheel-window on the west-facing gable. Inside, the chapel boasts a barrel vaulted ceiling, six side chapels, and Art Deco altar pieces of pink and black marble with mosaic panels, complemented by wooden pews.

The dormitory block, a plain Art Deco hospital ward block, is rectangular in plan with eight bays and three stories. It features a prominent entrance and stair tower with a long, multi-paned window, with the first and second stories recessed. The exterior is constructed from coursed red sandstone rubble with ashlar margins, with coursed polished red sandstone ashlar at ground floor level. Large, multi-paned metal casement windows are present. A bonded brick wall adjoins the house at ground floor level on the far left.

Various ancillary structures, including a 19th-century workshop building, a walled garden, and associated buildings, are located to the rear of the house.
