Description
The Walled Garden at Calderhaugh House, located on Calderhaugh Lane in Lochwinnoch, dates from the late 18th century. It features a two-storey, three-bay classical house characterized by a pedimented central bay. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar margins. It has a central, recessed door that includes a fanlight and ogival reveals in the architraves, topped with a cornice. The windows are 12-pane sashes, and there is an eaves course and cornice, along with an oculus in the pediment. The house displays scrolled skewputts, straight skews, corniced end stacks, and a slate roof.
To the southeast, there is an L-plan stable block made of rubble with ashlar margins, featuring segmental-headed and rectangular carriage openings, and a partly holed slate roof. A rubble wall extends southwest from the house, providing access to a Japanese Garden through a circular opening adorned with rendered voissoirs. The keystone of this opening is decorated with an elephant on the southeast face and a cockerel on the northwest face. Within the garden, there are elaborate Oriental-style wells, a fountain, and tables, as well as corniced square gatepiers.
