Description

Semple House and Low Semple House, including boundary walls, are attributed to Robert Hunter of Ayr and date from around 1735. The largely symmetrical remains of Castle Semple House face south towards Castle Semple Loch. The central ruins consist of external basement walls linked by screen walls to former wings, with L-plan former stable pavilions on either side, which have been converted into four separate residential dwellings in 2011. The buildings are constructed of ashlar stone with chamfered rusticated quoins on the outer sections, featuring raised margins and a cornice. The basement window openings have rusticated lintels, while the screen walls display open key-stoned round arches and round-arched niches. The inner elevations of the former wings also include round-arched key-stoned niches.

Landau House, located to the far right, is a two-storey, five-bay L-plan house with a re-entrant angle to the west. It features an exterior stone stair in the re-entrant angle, leading to a balcony supported by a single Ionic column. There is a single-storey section with a piended roof to the north and a pair of wide, key-stoned, round-arched window openings to the south, along with a low rubble wall and a decorative metal gate.

Castle Semple House, to the right, is a two-storey, six-bay former wing with a courtyard to the west. It has small window openings on the upper storey and some key-stoned round-arched window openings on the west elevation, topped by a tall curved boundary wall and a slated roof.

Semple House, to the left, is a two-storey, six-bay former wing with a low coped rubble wall to the south and small square window openings on the upper storey.

Low Semple House, located to the far left, is a two-storey, five-bay L-plan house with a later single-storey U-plan extension to the north, creating a courtyard. It also features a later lean-to glass-covered walkway along the north and west courtyard elevations, as well as a pair of wide, key-stoned, round-arched window openings to the south.

The glazing is a mixture, predominantly consisting of small pane replacement timber sash and case windows, with some six-over-six panes on the ground floor and three-over-three panes on the upper storey. There are casement windows on the property at the far left. The roofs are covered with grey slates, featuring a bell-cast design on Landau House, Castle Semple House, and Semple House, along with cast iron rainwater goods.

The interiors, partly seen in 2011, are later in design.
