Ice House, Castle Semple Park

Lower Cascade, located in Castle Semple Park, dates from the earlier to mid 18th century, with a mid 19th century ice house. This site features various architectural elements from the designed landscape of the former Castle Semple Estate, including cascades and a cave.

The cascades, which are from the earlier 18th century, consist of a series of three cascades running from west to east, constructed of stugged ashlar and are partly ruinous as of 2011.

The upper terrace cascade includes a beam bridge with a steep, recessed, stepped central section to the east featuring a central spout. The middle cascade has a beam bridge with a segmental arch to the east and a lower, recessed wall beneath, supported by bull-faced abutments. The lower cascade is also partly ruinous, made of squared stone and rubble, with a wide beam bridge that has a small square opening to the east and a semi-circular culvert wall at the far east.

The cave, possibly from the 18th century, is an artificial hollowed-out structure set into rock near the upper cascade. It features a battered opening and vermiculated rustication on the arch stones.

The ice house, likely from the mid 19th century, is built into a hillside and constructed of random rubble. It has a battered wall to the north with a central, narrow, round-arched entrance. The interior is made of rubble and brick, with a stone-paved floor leading to a deep brick-lined cavern on the right.
