Description
Violet House is a church designed by W D McLennan and built between 1899 and 1904. It features an Art Nouveau interpretation of Gothic architecture, incorporating a modified basic formula. The design includes traditional elements such as a nave-and-aisles layout and a main gabled front with a traceried window at the gallery level, which faces Cyril Street. Unique to this building are the artistic treatments and the porches that flank the gable, designed to resemble turrets with large, steep, slated roofs. At the south end, there is a lower hall block that faces Violet Street. The church is constructed of red ashlar stone and has slate roofs with red ridging.
