East Church, Glenpatrick Road, Elderslie

East Church, located on Glenpatrick Road in Elderslie, was built between 1898 and 1900 by W D McLennan. This free church features a Gothic style with some Art Nouveau elements, such as the sweeping gable ends. The nave has battered buttresses on the west gable that flank a large traceried window. There is an unusual porch at the northwest corner, with an entrance door set at an angle facing the gateway at the street corner. Adjoining the east gable is a simpler low hall or session house, which has a flat-lintelled mullioned window on its front gable. The church is constructed of rock-faced red ashlar with polished detailing, and it has Westmoreland slate roofs. Near the west end, there is an axial ventilator designed to resemble a belfry. The interior was not seen for this report in May 1996. The property also features gabled gatepiers and low perimeter walls, although the railings have been removed.
