Description

This building comprises a 1910 tenement and shops designed by E Simpson of Stirling, situated in an irregular terrace on Bank Street, Aberfeldy. The building is set on a ground that falls steeply to the north.

The principal, south elevation is red sandstone ashlar and harl with ashlar dressings. The ground floor features a shop at the left of centre with granite pilasters, a timber door with a mosaic-tiled step reading "McKerchar & McNaughton," and flanking display windows. Above, the first floor has transomed tripartite windows, each with a pediment and carved cartouche bearing the initials "AD" and the date "1910." A steeply-pitched, decorative gable rises above. Bays to the right of centre contain another shop, and three transomed bipartite windows above. The eastern elevation features a gabled bay with a full-height, four-light canted window on each floor. The lower basement level has blank angles, while the ground floor has a transomed window. The first floor has a crenellated semicircular pediment and ball finials. A further set-back gabled bay to the right angles outwards, with windows on the ground and first floors. The rear, north elevation has a variety of openings, including stair windows.

The building incorporates 12-pane upper sashes over plate glass lower sashes in timber sash and case windows, with plate glass glazing elsewhere. Grey slates and terracotta ridge tiles cover the roof. The chimneys are stone and ashlar-coped, with skewputts and stone finials. Cast iron downpipes include decorative rainwater hoppers.

The former McKerchar & McNaughton shop retains fine interiors, including boarded timber walls, decorative plasterwork, and a T-plan top-lit staircase with decorative timber balusters and finialled newels. An adjacent shop has been altered with more modern interiors. The Group Value is enhanced by the building’s architectural detailing and historic significance as a retail presence in the town.
