Description
St Magdalene's Gunpowder Magazine, located at Friarton Quarry on Gleneagles Road, was built in 1878 and is a rare example of a 5-bay, rectangular-plan gunpowder magazine with a piend roof. It is situated on sloping ground at the western outskirts of Perth, featuring a high boundary wall. The structure is made of dressed and squared pink and grey rubble, has a deep eaves course, a slated roof, and ironwork detailing.
The north and south side elevations each have five small vertical window openings above five horizontally-aligned openings, which provide indirect ventilation for the raised basement below. The west elevation includes two underfloor air vents that flank the steps leading to a central timber door, which is positioned below a small window opening.
