Description
Learig, Chapelhill is a cottage built around 1839. It is a two-storey, two-bay, rectangular-plan east cottage with a single storey and attic, forming an L-plan with a bow west cottage, creating an asymmetrical double cottage. The structure features a partial base course and is constructed from snecked rubble with squared rubble quoins and raked stone cills, along with voussoirs.
On the southeast elevation, the cottage to the east (Learig) has an advanced gable to the right and a slightly projecting center with a voussoired bipartite window at ground level and a tiny gablehead window above. To the left, there is a timber-lintelled blinded doorway in the bowed re-entrant, accompanied by a part-glazed timber door and flanking small bipartite windows. The taller west cottage (Viewfield) features a bipartite window on each floor and an additional bipartite window in a recessed bay to the right under a sloping roof.
The northeast elevation includes a window in a slightly advanced bay to the left, with a door and paired bipartite windows to the right, as well as modern rooflights. The southwest elevation has a gabled bay to the right with a window at ground level and a tiny window in the gablehead, along with another window in a recessed bay to the left.
On the northwest (rear) elevation, there is a broad gable to the left with small windows on each floor, and another gable to the right with a window to the left and a smaller window under a catslide roof to the outer left. A modern porch is located in an off-centre left recess, featuring a pronounced bowed roof above.
Most of the windows have been modernized, with multi-pane casements on the Viewfield side and top-opening and casement windows on the Learig side. The roof is covered with grey slates and includes modern Velux windows. The chimney stacks are raised in brick, grouped and diamond-aligned to the east. The eaves overhang with plain bargeboarding.
