Description
Pitfour Castle, located in St Madoes, was designed by Robert Adam in 1784 and features a Roman Castellated style. The main block is three stories high with a battered full basement and circular angle towers, and it has a south-facing bow. The exterior is constructed of rubble whinstone with sandstone dressings. To the north, there is a courtyard that includes a single-storey and loft stable block, which also has round towers and a hemicycle wall to the east.
William Burn made additions to the castle in 1825, which included a new library and a circular music room to the northwest, a clock tower at the southwest, and the raising of the northeast stable block tower. The entrance hall created by Burn was removed in 1964, and efforts to restore the north front to its original design began in 1966.
Inside, the castle features an oral staircase with dome figure panels by Zucchi, along with good chimney-pieces and fairly simple plasterwork.
