Description
Balthayock Castle is a massive rectangular tower house dating from the 14th or 15th century. It is constructed of whin rubble with sandstone dressings, measuring 52 feet by 37 feet, and features very thick walls. The entrance door is arched, and there is a barrel vaulted hall at the first floor level. The interior, battlements, and external stair were added by James Maclaren in 1870, as the castle was in a ruinous state prior to that date. There is a side arch with a panel dated 1578, attributed to A.B. (Blair). The castle is currently in poor condition.
