Stables And Coachhouse, Orchil House

The stables and coachhouse, probably designed by Andrew Heiton around 1870, originally comprised two parallel single-storey ranges running east to west. The southern range, which served as a barn, has remained largely unaltered and is now used as a garage and store. The northern range was altered around the 1920s with the addition of an attic storey and is now in domestic use. A pitched-roof entrance porch projects from the courtyard elevation of this northern range. The courtyard elevations are built with stugged and snecked ashlar, while the outer southern and northern elevations are constructed from rubble. Both ranges are roofed with slate, with piend roofs. The eastern entrance is defined by screen walls and a pair of circular piers made of bull-faced ashlar. These piers have stepped masonry conical caps topped with ball finials. A “three quarter span” conservatory is attached to the west of the southern range. The buildings are located at Orchil Den, formerly serving as stables and a coach house for Orchil New House.
