Description

46-50 South Street is a three-storey and attic, three-bay Scots-Jacobean tenement block designed by William McLaren and dated 1889. The building features a symmetrical façade with a central panel that depicts flesher's emblems and has pedimented gablets flanked by ball-finials. The ground floor has painted timber pilastered shopfronts. The structure is built of red sandstone ashlar with moulded dressings and has bipartite fenestration.

The central doorway on the ground floor has a timber panelled door and a large box fanlight above, with shops on either side featuring plate glass windows in the outer bays. A moulded timber cornice with triangular stops adorns the outer pilasters. On the first and second floors, the central bay has bipartite windows with raised margins, and a carved date is set within the moulded parapet above. The outer bays also have bipartite windows with stone mullions and narrow pilasters, separated by roundel decorated panels between the first and second floors. The attic features triangular pediments above the two-light gablet dormers.

The windows are timber sash and case with horns and single-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods.
