Description

Burnside Cottage is an early 19th-century, two-storey and attic former loom house that has been converted into a dwelling. It features a distinctive rectangular plan and is situated on ground that falls sharply to the northwest, with a later extension at the rear. This building is an interesting and rare example of vernacular architecture that significantly contributes to the streetscape. The exterior is constructed of tooled random rubble with droved dressings polished at the margins. The piend roof includes timber dormers that break the eaves at the attic floor.

The entrance elevation to the northwest is nearly symmetrical, with a five-bay ground floor that has a timber door at the center and small square windows in the flanking bays. The first floor has four similar windows, while three large dormer windows are positioned above. Gabled bays are located to the southwest and northeast, each featuring stone steps that rise steeply toward the rear and two windows on the first and attic floors.

The windows have replacement glazing patterns of 4, 12, and 15 panes in timber casement and sash and case styles. The roof is covered with grey slates and has a lead ridge. The gableheads are coped with rubble and have some chimney cans, while the skews are finished with ashlar coping.

The boundary walls to the northeast and southwest are made of rubble, with the wall to the southwest being coped.
