Description
Duncraggan is a villa located on Perth Road in Blairgowrie, designed by James Lowe in the late 19th century. This single storey and attic building features three bays and a prominent two-stage ogee-domed tower, showcasing fine terracotta detailing. The exterior is constructed from rock-faced and roughly squared rubble, accented with polished and stugged ashlar dressings. Notable architectural features include a deep terracotta frieze with anthemion detailing and a cornice with mutules. The roof has dentilled segmental-headed dormer windows and hoodmoulded oculi, along with some stop-chamfered arrises and stone mullions.
On the south elevation, which faces Essendy Road, there are two bays to the left of the center, topped by a projecting cornice that forms a porch over a deep-set vertically-panelled timber door. This door is flanked by narrow lights and a three-part fanlight to the right, with a broad segmental-arched tripartite window to the left. Above, there are two slate-hung tripartite dormer windows. The round tower dominates the outer right angle, featuring a four-part window that leads to a frieze and a continuous arcaded hoodmould with alternating glazed oculi, a deep cornice, and a dome topped with a weathervane finial.
The east elevation, facing Perth Road, has a polygonal-roofed canted window to the right of the center, with a blank bay to the left that has a wallhead stack above, and the tower is positioned beyond to the left. The north elevation, or rear, has outer bays with dormer windows, while the center bay includes a small window close to the ground and a stair window above, which breaks the eaves into two wallhead stacks. The west elevation is asymmetrically fenestrated, featuring a variety of elements such as a projecting low piended bay, a dormer window to the left, and a wallhead stack to the right.
The windows are timber sash and case, with 4-pane and plate glass glazing patterns, and there is a leaded coloured glass stair window. The roof is covered with grey slates and features red brick Shavian stacks, along with deeply overhanging eaves and a swept piended roof. The interior was not seen in 2002.
