Robert Douglas Memorial Institute, Abbey Road, New Scone

The Robert Douglas Memorial Institute, located on Abbey Road in New Scone, is a large single-storey Gothic former school built in 1876, which now serves as a community facility. It has been extended to incorporate an earlier school from 1846. There is also a contemporary single-storey schoolhouse with an attic that adjoins the earlier school, facing Mansfield Road.

The building features snecked and tooled sandstone with ashlar detailing. It is well lit by a variety of windows, including tripartite, bipartite, and single windows, some of which have stone mullions. The glazing varies, featuring 8-pane timber sash and case windows as well as 4-pane timber sash and case windows with bottom-hinged top hoppers. Some windows in the house have been replaced with UPVC windows, and the attic windows are adorned with cusped bargeboards.

At the southwest angle of the school, there is a porch with cusped bargeboards and a dated clock set within an arched recess, along with a fleche above. The gables are decorated with quatrefoil windows. The pitched slate roof covers both the house and the school, and there are cusped and triangular roof vents in the school. The building also features stone stacks, a rubble wall, and modern railings along the boundary.
