Description
Ayton House is a large, asymmetrical mansion built in a late classical style. Originally, it was a three-storey U-plan house with a five-window front, constructed in the mid-18th century. The house features harled walls with quoin angles and a piend roof. The southern wing appears to be of an earlier date, showcasing moulded skews at the western gable, a vaulted ground floor, and five-foot walls at the eastern corner.
In 1830, William Burn made significant additions and remodelling, creating an L-plan, ashlar-faced northern wing that is three storeys tall. This wing includes two-storey bay windows at pedimented gables, a consoled and balustraded balcony on the first floor of the northern front, and a square Roman Doric pilastered porch. The main eastern front is ashlar-faced, while the remainder of the original house remains harled. A coat of arms from 1878 is inserted in the porch.
Additionally, a semi-decagonal two-storey bay was added to the main front, and a two-storey north-west back wing, which is harled with quoin angles, was constructed by Sir Robert Stodart Lorimer between 1907 and 1909. The interior features notable work by Burn in the principal rooms.
