Description
Newstead is a single-storey, three-bay cottage built in the later to late 19th century, with some alterations. It has a symmetrical, rectangular plan and is situated on rising ground to the west, adjacent to a former mill complex that is now derelict. There is also a small, single-storey ancillary building made of random rubble, which may have been rebuilt later, located to the northeast.
The cottage is constructed from random rubble, with windows positioned close to the eaves and featuring deep-set openings. On the east (principal) elevation, there is a boarded door in the central bay, with a window in each of the flanking bays. The west (rear) elevation has a central window, while the south (side) elevation includes a window set to the left, with a gablehead stack above.
The windows have been replaced with timber frames that include top-hung upper lights. The roof is covered with replacement grey slate and features a stone ridge, corniced rubble gablehead stacks, and thack stanes. A flagstone path runs along the east elevation, bordered by a low, flagstone-coped drystone wall, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods on the west side.
The ancillary building has a deep-set door on the east side and is topped with a corrugated-iron roof.
