6 Khyber Pass And Adjoining Outbuilding To Nw, Stromness

The Walled Garden at 6 Khyber Pass in Stromness is a late 18th-century cottage that has undergone later alterations. It is a single-storey, three-bay rectangular building that is nearly symmetrical, constructed on rising ground to the west and finished with harling. There is a lean-to square-plan outbuilding that hugs the northwest corner of the cottage.

On the south elevation, which is the principal front, there is a modern part-glazed boarded door located in the central bay, with a window in each of the flanking bays. The east side elevation features a single bay gabled wall with a window positioned to the left and a gablehead stack above. The west side elevation also has a single bay gabled wall, with a single bay outbuilding attached to the outer left. A window is set to the right, with a gablehead stack above it.

The cottage has four-pane timber sash and case windows and a Caithness slate roof, which has heavily tarred joints. The roof features concrete skews, harled corniced gablehead stacks on the east and west, thackstanes, and uPVC rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1997. The outbuilding is a square-plan rubble shed with a boarded door on the west elevation and a corniced rubble stack at the northeast angle, adjacent to the northwest corner of the main building. It also has a heavily tarred Caithness slate roof.

To the north, there are rubble walls that enclose a rectangular garden shared with 41 Graham Place.
