Description

Nouster is a later to late 19th century, two-storey, three-bay symmetrical laird's house located in North Ronaldsay. It features a long single-storey projection to the rear, forming an L-plan, with a later lean-to addition at the internal angle. The exterior is harled, and the windows are set close under the eaves.

On the east (principal) elevation, there is a window in a pitched-roofed entrance porch at ground level in the central bay, with a boarded door on the left side and a window above on the first floor. Each of the flanking bays has a window on both floors.

The west (rear) elevation includes two windows and a boarded door to the left of the lean-to addition, with a small, centered window on the first floor of the main house above. There is a centered window in the lean-to addition, which is at right angles to the long projection to the left, with a blank gable above.

On the north (side) elevation, there is a window on each floor, offset to the right on the main gable, with a gablehead stack above. A centered boarded door leads to the projection, with a window to the left and a blocked doorway to the right.

The south (side) elevation features a window on each floor, offset to the left on the main gable, also with a gablehead stack above. There is a five-bay projection to the left that includes three boarded doors and two windows.

The house predominantly has four-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with purple slate, while the lean-to addition has a corrugated-iron roof, and the entrance porch has a similar covering. The west lean-to has a traditional flagstone roof, with stone ridges, harled corniced gablehead stacks, coped skews, and predominantly uPVC rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen during the last assessment in 1998.
