Description
Mounthoolie, located at 27-29 Albert Street in Kirkwall, is an early 18th-century building, possibly dating from 1714. It is a two-storey and attic structure with a rectangular plan and a rear wing, originally designed as a house but now converted into two shops on the ground floor. The exterior features painted cement render that is lined at the ground level and also rendered and lined above. A corniced band course with scrolled terminals separates the ground floor from the first floor, which has deep-set windows with cement sills.
On the principal elevation (east), there are deep-set, two-leaf timber-panelled doors with a rectangular fanlight, located in a bay offset to the left of centre. To the left of these doors is a small display window, while a large shop window with an integral door is situated in the outer left bay. To the right of centre, there are two large openings featuring inwardly angled shop windows and modern glazed doors. The first floor has three irregularly placed windows.
The north side elevation is symmetrical with two bays, each containing a window at the first floor and attic levels, and features a gablehead stack above. The outer right side of this elevation is blank due to the wing. The south side elevation has a window on each floor in the right bay, with Number 31 Albert Street, which is listed separately, abutting to the left and a gablehead stack above.
The building exhibits a variety of glazing patterns, including replacement two-pane timber sash and case windows on the first floor, modern timber-framed shop windows on the ground floor, and uPVC windows on the north side. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a stone ridge, with cement-rendered and lined, corniced gablehead stacks on the north and south sides, along with uPVC rainwater goods.
The interior has been converted for use as shops on the ground floor, while the upper levels remain unseen and were last noted in 1998.
