Description
The Central Barn Range at Howa dates from the earlier to mid 19th century and consists of a single-storey, two-bay farmhouse that is connected to a former dwelling house and byre range, which is roofless, running on an east-west axis. A rectangular-plan barn is situated at right angles to these ranges, with a kiln range lying parallel to the south, built on sloping ground that falls to the west. The farmhouse is constructed of harl-pointed rubble, while the other structures use random rubble.
On the south elevation, the farmhouse is located to the outer right and features a boarded door with a small-pane fanlight in the bay to the left, and a window in the bay to the right. The central section contains a two-bay former dwelling house and byre, with a doorway and a window flanking each bay. To the left is a single-bay byre with a doorway on the outer left. The north elevation has a window in each bay, with a small window to the outer right of the farmhouse. The farmhouse has 4- and 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a purple slate roof, a stone ridge, and rubble gablehead stacks.
The interior was not seen in 1998.
The barn and kiln range on the south elevation is divided into two levels. There is a square-headed opening set to the left in the upper section and a bee-skep-shaped kiln at the east gable. The north elevation features a doorway with a small blocked window flanking the lower block, and a blocked doorway to the right of the upper block. The roof is made of corrugated asbestos.
Inside, the kiln at the east end is notable for being fine and complete, with a square-headed kiln entrance that has an intact step, and both the kiln ledge and timber killace are intact.
On the west elevation of the central barn range, there is a boarded door in the bay to the right, while the east elevation is blank. The interior was not seen in 1998.
