Description
Stromness 20-22 Graham Place is a house dating from the earlier to mid 19th century, with some later alterations. It is a two-storey and attic, four-bay rectangular-plan house that is nearly symmetrical, divided internally. The house features a three-bay gable facing the street and is adjacent to 2-4 Dundas Street at the rear. The exterior is constructed of pointed random rubble, with painted cement rendering and lined detailing at the ground level to the west, including cement margins around the openings. There is a band course between the ground and first floors, as well as an eaves course. A modern garage, also cement-rendered and lined, projects from the east gable and has a sliding boarded door and a corrugated-iron roof.
On the north (principal) elevation, there is a modern part-glazed timber panelled door at ground level in the bay to the left of centre, with a window above it on the first floor. There is a window in the outer left bay at both floors and another window at ground level in the bay to the right, with a first-floor window in the outer right bay.
The west (Graham Place) elevation features a deep-set part-glazed modern timber door with a fanlight at ground level in the central bay, flanked by large windows in each bay. There is a first-floor window in the bay to the right, an attic window above it, and a gablehead stack.
The windows are modern timber-framed with top-hung upper lights, and there are former shop windows at ground level on the west elevation. The roof is covered with old Orkney grey slate and has a stone ridge, rooflights on the north pitch, corniced rubble gablehead stacks, thackstanes, and uPVC rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen in 1997. The boundary wall is cement-rendered and flanks a Caithness slabbed alley along the north elevation, featuring a concrete-coped rubble terminal pier to the west and a square-headed store below.
