Burial Enclosure, Melsetter Hill, Walls, Hoy

The burial enclosure at Melsetter Hill in Walls, Hoy, dates from the earlier 20th century and features a rectangular plan. It contains two rough slab gravestones, one positioned at the 'head' and the other at the 'foot' of a double grave belonging to Thomas and Theodosia Middlemore. The gravestones are made of roughly hewn stone slabs, both with rounded tops. The larger headstone is inscribed with a cross botonee and flanking quatrefoils in a naive design. Its worn inscription includes the names 'Thomas Middlemore and his wife Theodosia' along with what appears to be their dates. The smaller footstone features an interlinking hearts motif with the initials T M above and below, representing Thomas and Theodosia Middlemore. Surrounding the enclosure is a boundary wall constructed of coursed rubble with rubble coping. Access to the enclosure is provided by steps located on either side of the wall leading to the center of the west side.
