Description
Overtown Parish Church is a plain Gothic church built in the later 19th century. It has a rectangular plan and a gabled roof. At the southeast corner, there is a three-stage, square-plan belltower topped with a spire. The church is constructed from squared and snecked, tooled yellow sandstone and features pointed arch openings with stopped hoodmoulds above the main openings.
On the southeast elevation, which is the principal facade, the nave gable end displays a large three-light plate traceried window at the center. To the left is the tower, which has a shouldered timber door in the center with a relieving pointed arch above it. There is a small lancet window at the second stage, a string course separating the second and third stages, and louvered two-light plate traceried openings on each face of the third stage. The eaves course leads up to the slate spire, which has a weathervane at its apex.
The northwest elevation, which is the rear, features a stepped three-light window at the center, but the ground is obscured by a modern extension that abuts the church. The northeast elevation has five bays but is also obscured by a modern church hall. The southwest elevation has five bays with an advanced aisle that abuts the nave and features a swept roof. It is regularly fenestrated with tripartite windows that have stone mullions, except for the outer right bay of the tower, which has a blind tall lancet window at ground level.
The church includes diamond leaded glass, grey slates with lead flashings, cast-iron rainwater goods, and coped kneelered skews. There is a coped stack at the rear gable. The interior was not seen in 2000.
